The continuous negotiation of the authority of oil and gas dependent states.
The chapter discusses the growing social conflicts resulting from the “gasolinazo” in Bolivia in 2010, when the government sought unsuccessfully to eliminate fuel subsidies. The articulation between the social-economic and the political’symbolic in hydrocarbon governance opens for questioning the sovereignty of the state, its relation to society and the pluri-national state project initiated in 2006.
